Environment, Energy and Climate Change Minister Tina Birbili described the bill on protecting biodiversity that was approved by Parliament, on March 15, as a "great step forward in protecting these areas".

Speaking to local media, Birbili said she was confident that the new law will help address issues of unlawful development and environmental degradation throughout Greece, noting that 60% of complaints concern areas within the Natura 2000 network.

The bill provides a legal framework that could effectively protect biodiversity, bringing legislation in line with European norms. It simplifies procedures for the inclusion of areas into the "National System of Protected Areas," and the status and the permitted land use in protected areas.

Situated at just 10 km. off the Greek-Bulgarian border, Agistro is one of the oldest villages of Serres prefecture that hosts one of the most delightful secrets of Northern Greek tourism: its 11th century steam bath complex.

Initially built in 950 and later modified by the Ottomans, the Agistro hamam was recently restored and has since acquired considerable fame among spa connoisseurs.

The complex includes the original sky-lit dome, plus more recent bathtubs. The village offers various accommodation options, ranging from comfortable guesthouses to luxury chalets.

The thermal waters, with a temperature of 39-41 degrees Celsius, are considered therapeutic for rheumatic and arthritic ailments. All bathtubs, including the dome, can be booked for private use.
