Prime Minister George Papandreou and Party of European Socialists (PES) President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen opened the PES leaders' summit that took place at the Zappeion Hall in Athens on March 4-5.

Addressing the summit, Papandreou thanked the socialist leaders for their solidarity towards Greece, and said that "changes in Greece and changes in Europe are to us part and parcel of our shared approach so as to achieve a Europe of values and solidarity."

At a joint press conference, Papandreou and Rasmussen both noted that EU must take the correct decisions at the March 25 Summit, stressing that Europe needs vision and will, as well as innovative tools such as the Eurobond and the tax on fiscal transactions. The Summit adopted a proclamation titled Europe is in the wrong hands, which sets out an alternative to the 'austerity-only' agenda.

At the press conference held following the meeting, Rasmussen, together with French Socialist Party First Secretary Martine Aubry and European Progressive Studies Foundation President Massimo d'Alema, expressed unanimous support for Greek and Irish loans' repayment extension period, with a simultaneous decrease in interest rates.

Finance Ministry: Unjustified Downgrade

Posted: 08 Mar 2011 03:05 AM PST

The Finance Ministry announced that Moody's downgrading of the Greek debt rating is "completely unjustified as it does not reflect an objective and balanced assessment of the conditions Greece is presently facing."

According to a press release issued by the Ministry on March 7, the timing and the nature of the downgrade are incomprehensible, raising a number of questions. IMF European Director Antonio Borges said commented that "we maintain our confidence in what is happening in Greece," adding that "the Greek debt is sustainable, and therefore, our programme will be successful."

Reiterating the European Commission's position not to comment on rating firms announcements, spokesperson Amelia Torres said the Commission has its own assessments, publicised at regular intervals.

Moussaka …with a Twist?

Moussaka with ice cream tomato; Greek salad using tomato sorbet, feta mousse, cucumber caviar, pureed olives and creamed onion; oven-roasted chickpeas with sour orange and rosemary; monkfish with mastic liquor cream from the Aegean island of Chios and braised garfish with fava bean mousse.

These are some of dishes that a new generation of Greek chefs produce, based on fine local ingredients, traditional cooking recipes, and plenty… of imagination. "A new generation of talented chefs who have taken over the Athens restaurant scene and are enriching Greece's culinary heritage with a spin on traditional favorites," writes Christine Pirovolakis, in an article in Wall Street Journal titled Not Your Typical Greek Salad.
