Social Security Provisions for Migrants

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 03:02 AM PST

Legal migrants working in Greece will need fewer social security stamps – 120 instead of 200 currently - to renew their residence permits and gain access to state healthcare, according to a decision announced on February 28, by Alternate Labour and Social Security Minister, Yiorgos Koutroumanis.

The measure was examined as a way to ease the burden on many legal migrants, who have been working in Greece for many years and may not be able to secure the number of stamps needed to extend their permits because of the economic crisis. The changes will be included in a draft bill to be submitted in Parliament soon, which would enable a crackdown on clandestine employment.
