The Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change presented the first official maps delineating the boundaries of the country's forests on April 6.

Environment Minister Tina Birbili announced the completion of the maps of forestland in Marathon, Palaia Pendeli and Nea Pendeli, stressing that the drafting and public display of forest maps marks the launch of a very crucial project aimed at curbing illegal construction and protecting the environment.

The maps, which have been drawn up using aerial photographs of forestland dating between 1945 and 2008, will be finalized by incorporating any valid objections submitted by landowners and local authorities as of April 11.

The next set of maps - delineating forests in Volos, Ilia, Evros, Kavala and Drama - are going to be published by the end of June.
