The International Monetary Fund approved yesterday the disbursement of the 4th tranche of the EU/IMF loan to Greece, amounting to €4.1 billion. In the relevant press release, the IMF states that "Greece's economic program has made further progress toward its key objectives."

Following the Executive Board's discussion, First Deputy Managing Director and Acting Chair John Lipsky said that "overall, a measure of stabilization has been achieved."

Meanwhile at a Eurogroup Finance Ministers meeting in Brussels, George Papaconstantinou said that the "good decision" taken by the European Council helps further Greece to proceed with its programme in promoting reforms and pursuing fiscal consolidation.

Eurogroup chairman Jean-Claude Juncker that yesterday's meeting would delve further into the details of the agreement reached on March 11, which he termed a "good decision," adding that similar steps should be taken for Ireland.

Climate Change Debate: Getting Bolder

Environment, Energy and Climate Change Minister Tina Birbili has joined six of her European Union counterparts in calling for a 30% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2020, instead of the current European target of 20%.

The move would not only protect the environment but also create jobs and help protect Europe from future spikes in the price of oil, the ministers write in an open letter.

The letter which signed –except for Tina Birbili - by Chris Huhne (UK), Andreas Carlgren (Sweden), Lykke Friis (Denmark), Rosa Aguilar Rivero (Spain), Humberto D Rosa (Portugal), and Dr Norbert Röttgen (Germany), appeared in the British daily The Guardian, yesterday.

Dutch Military Evacuated from Libya

A group of Greek citizens as well as three Dutch military personnel were transported, on a Hellenic Air Force C-130, to Athens from Tripoli, on March 11.

The operation was overseen by the Foreign Ministry and Deputy Foreign Minister Dimitris Dollis was aboard the aircraft.

"We managed to successfully negotiate the release of the three Dutch marines and we had the opportunity to bring back another 12 people, Greeks and Libyan relatives, in an operation involving one C-130," Dollis stressed in a televised interview. The three Dutch marines were arrested, on February 27, near the port of Sirte and detained by the Libyan authorities.

Italian Republic Honours Greek Surgeon

Italian President Giorgio Napolitano recently honoured Greek surgeon Nikolaos Lygidakis with a knighthood assigning him the rank of Commander of the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity.

The honour is a recognition of the surgeon's many innovations in field of oncological surgery, including the Lygidakis Pouch, a stomach reservoir placed after total gastrectomy.

The white-enamelled knight's cross was bestowed by Italian Ambassador Francesco Trupiano on March 8 in Athens. Lygidakis studied at the Athens University Medical Faculty and specialized in Surgical Oncology in the USA, England, France and Holland.

He was honorary Director in Hepato Biliary and Pancreatic surgery in the University of Hammersmith in London and served as assistant surgical Professor and Director in the Academic Surgical Clinic in Amsterdam. He currently heads the Department of Surgical Oncology in the Athens Medical Centre Hospital.

Kosmidis: Still First

After winning last year's World Championship and World Cup title in floor exercise, gymnast Lefteris Kosmidis started this season's events with another victory: on March 12, he won the gold medal in GymWorld Challenger Cup Masters' Tournament held in Cottbus, Germany.

The 20-year-old athlete – that was 1st in the 2010 World Ranking List for Floor exercises – performed a set of exercises with an impressive 6,70 difficulty score that secured him the gold medal.

On the same event, 18-year-old Lefteris Petrounias won the silver medal in the rings competition.

Hellenic Foundation For Culture Events

  • Of Alexandria
A photography exhibition by Paris Petridis titled Of Alexandria was launched March 10 at the Alexandria Branch of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture. The exhibition features 22 photographs taken by the photographer from Thessaloniki that depict the cosmopolitan urban past of the city, as well as places of particular interest to its once thriving Greek community.

The exhibition is sponsored by the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and will be on display until April 30.
  • Marathon Battle @ Trieste
Two exhibitions on the occasion of the 2500th anniversary of the Battle of Marathon are presented at the centre of the Giubileo event hall by the Trieste Branch of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture.

The first features archive material from the private collection of researcher and author George Dolianitis depicting the timeless role of the Battle in world history and its impact on modern western civilisation.

The second is a photo exhibition by renowned photographer Roberta Radini titled Basileva, Ditorni di Maratona that features scenes from italian marathon races. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism sponsor the event.
