  • Meeting With President Sarkozy
Prime Minister George Papandreou met with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris yesterday.

The two leaders discussed developments in North Africa, as well as the euro zone crisis, just one day before the Extraordinary Summit taking place in Brussels today.

In statements made to the press following the meeting, Papandreou referred to the crucial EU summit, saying that the Greece and France share "very similar views as to what should be done," and thanked the French government and people for their solidarity to Greece.

In an interview to Le Monde, Papandreou referred to the upcoming summit, saying that Europe must take courageous and adequate measures "in order to put an end to the cycle of instability and uncertainty."

Referring to Greece, he said that lowering the interest rate and extending the maturity of the EU/IMF loans to Greece would be "decisive factors" to guarantee that the country is able to continue meeting its long-term objectives, stressing that "there are considerable margins to manoeuvre in order to relax the terms of the financial support programme."

NATO Meeting on Libya

Defence Minister Evangelos Venizelos is in Brussels to attend the two-day meeting of NATO Defence Ministers at which the evolving situation in Libya is at the top of the agenda.

Venizelos stressed the need for a clear message to be sent by the international community for a final and steadfast solution to be found in Libya, in accordance with the principles of democracy and state of law.

Referring to the same issue, while in Paris, Prime Minister George Papandreou stated that EU must reach important decisions, regarding the violence in Libya, with the aim to both reconstruct the economies in North Africa, as well as support democratic transition in the region. He further said that the issue is of vital concern to Greece as a neighbouring country.

Turkish FM Visits Thessaloniki and Kavala

Visiting Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was in Thessaloniki yesterday, where he met with Mayor Yannis Boutaris. In statements after the meeting, Davutoglu spoke of "a period of very great friendship" between the two countries, stressing that Thessaloniki can serve as a friendship bridge connected to Istanbul and Izmir.

He further said that in the last year the number of Turkish tourists in Thessaloniki has doubled, while it has trebled all over Greece, adding that he will support a wider air, railway and coastal shipping linking of Thessaloniki with Turkish cities. He also visited Turkish consulate in Thessaloniki and was given a guided tour of the historic building. On the previous day, he visited the port city of Kavala, where he was guided to the historic Old town quarter.

Illegal Migration Action Plan on Track

The Ministry of Citizen Protection, in a press release issued on March 9, reiterated that Greece with the assistance of the European Commission and European funding is making immense efforts to implement the Greek National Action Plan on mixed migration flows, despite the disproportionate burden that is being placed on the country as a result of the influx of a large number of irregular migrants.

The Ministry announced the new actions that are currently being implemented, stressing Greece's commitment to deal with the problem as swiftly and efficiently as possible.

Science Fiction and Fantasy Festival

The Athens International Science Fiction and Fantasy festival is coming back to the screen from March 10 to 16.

SFF-Rated Athens started as a retrospective of Greek Short Films of the genre, but quickly evolved into an international event, featuring an international competition section. This year, 37 films from 23 countries will compete for the prizes, while a total of 78 films will be screened.

The highlight of the festival will be the world premiere of The Whisperer in Darkness, a cinema adaptation of H.P.Lovecraft's novel of the same title produced by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society. The festival is organised by the Science Fiction Club of Athens and will take place at the Mikrokosmos multicinema.

Aquatic Adventures in the Wildest River of Athens!

Have you ever imagined doing rafting or kayak in a wild river running through Athens? The lovers of aquatic adventure can now live this experience at the Canoe Kayak Slalom Olympic Venue, where the Canoe Kayak Sports and Fun Days 2011 take place from February 28 to April 17.

Rafting, Inflatable Boats or Kayak are some of the White Water activities that public can participate to after taking brief introductory lessons from experienced raft guides or kayakers.

Along with Fun Days 2011 runs the European Training Slalom Camp from February 28 to March 27 and the 13th Pan-Hellenic Canoe Kayak Slalom Championship on March 26-27. The event is organised by the Hellinikon Entertainment and Sport Parks, under the auspices of the Hellenic Canoe Kayak Federation.
