Greek-Egyptian Business Forum in Cairo

Deputy Foreign Minister Spyros Kouvelis opened on May 19 a Greek-Egyptian business forum in Cairo, in which more than 100 business people from Greece and Egypt participated.

Kouvelis said his visit to Cairo was important because it was taking place at a time when Egypt was in the process of changing and recreating itself.

"We have come to build new bridges of cooperation between our two peoples and to boost entrepreneurship between the two states," he said. Kouvelis referred to tourism as an area with high potential for cooperation between Greece and Egypt. There is an estimated € 1-1.4 billion of Greek capital invested in Egypt, with 120 Greek companies operating in the country.

According to the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), Greek exports to Egypt in 2010 increased by 31.3% compared to 2009, while imports from Egypt increased by 16.2%.

The 8th issue of the Hellenic Economic Policy Programme Newsletter can be found on-line. Titled From May 2010 to May 2011, this issue looks back at last year's accomplishments.

The list of contents includes items such as Fiscal consolidation and the real economy, Main expenditure cuts and tax measures and Major reforms adopted. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance issued an announcement regarding the Greece's credit rating downgrade by Fitch.

AIA Tops Awards Again

Athens International Airport (AIA) added two more awards to its long list of honors and distinctions.

It was declared European Airport of the Year 2011 by the Institute of the Transport Management (ITM), as well as best airport in airline marketing in the Mediterranean and Southern Europe category by Routes Europe 2011

ITM, the foremost institute for transport management setting standards through benchmarking, especially distinguished AIA for its continuous and dynamic support towards its airline partners, through marketing programmes, development incentives, and the freeze of airport charges for a third year in a row. In the framework of the 6th Routes Europe forum held in Italy from May 8 to 10, AIA was highly commended from its airline partners for continuously supporting their development through its marketing programmes and development incentives.

AIA has been honoured with 8 Routes airport marketing distinctions, the only airport in the world with such a record.

So You Think You Can Dance?

The 10th edition of Dance Festival kicked off on May 18 with a record participation of 73 dance groups and more than 90 choreographers. Running through June 11, the festival which is organised by the Association of Greek Choreographers includes several events at dance studios and theatres.

Parallel to the festival, Athens Dance Week is taking place from May 23 to 30, inviting Athenians and the city's visitors to enjoy the most talented dancers in unique performances at off-stage venues such as open public spaces, exhibition halls and museums.

On May 23, Athens Opera Studio offers free lessons of classic ballet and modern dance. On May 25, the Museum of Islamic Art will host the performance On Ice, while the Theocharakis Foundation for the Fine Arts and Music will present the dancetheatre performance The ForBIDDEN city.

The last off-stage performance Present Bodies will take place at the glass floor of the Acropolis Museum ground level on May 27-28. Athens Dance Week is part of Athens Every Week programme run by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Kalymnos: "Aegean Climbing Paradise" Festival

From May 18 to 22, climbers from Greece and ten other countries gathered on the island of Kalymnos to participate at the Aegean Climbing Paradise Festival hosted annually. The first such festival was held in October 2000.

Apart from daily climbing, the festival included presentations from famous climbers, a treasure hunt, an open bouldering competition and a climbing photo competition.

Recently developed in terms of climbing, Kalymnos has reached amazing popularity to the point of being recognized as one of the top-10 sport climbing destinations in the world.

The island has various kinds of good quality limestone rocks with different difficulty levels like overhangs, caves with stalactites and slabs. The quality of the limestone rock is excellent, and has an easy access.

Cliffs are very close to residential areas - so no transportation is needed - and the island counts 44 high steep rocks.

International University Drama Festival

The 7th International University Drama Festival which hosts university theatre companies from Greece and other European countries opened on May 19 in the city of Serres and will run through June 5. This year's participants come from France, Germany, Serbia, Cyprus and Greece.

18 plays will be staged and a number of theatre workshops and seminars have been included in the Festival's programme. Renowned playwrights, directors and actors will teach the young aspiring artists.

The companies participating are mostly from Drama and Arts schools, but also from schools of Medicine and Technological Institutes.
