EU Finance Ministers agreed yesterday on a general approach on a package of measures aimed at strengthening economic governance in the EU and more specifically in the euro area, as part of the EU's response to the challenges highlighted by recent turmoil in sovereign dept markets.

Speaking to reporters, at the end of an ECOFIN meeting in Brussels yesterday, Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou said that the March 11 decisions constitute a major step by the eurozone to address market jitters.

"The eurozone will turn the page after the March summit. It will have the necessary mechanisms to address future problems," he added.

He also said that Greece may need to tap the European Financial Stability Facility in 2012 if the cost of borrowing in the bond market is prohibitive.

Regarding the high-profile €50 billion privatizations programme, Papaconstantinou said that "the action plan we are drafting will show the huge potential that exists out there. We have already had great interest by foreign investors, both for corporate entities, as well as individual assets."

Recycling out of the Frying Pan

Posted: 16 Mar 2011 03:54 AM PDT

Although cooking oil can be a major polluting factor (as one litre of oil can pollute one million litres of water), recycling it is not such an easy task, as transporting it to recycling points can be proven quite difficult.

Two childhood friends from Patras, Fotis Grammenos and Andreas Klaoudatos, decided to go the distance for everybody and created Collectoil. The small recycling business collects used cooking oil from restaurants, fast-food chains and other fat-frying enthusiasts in their home city and then sells it to Elinoil company in Volos to be converted into biodiesel, to be used in vehicles and as heating oil.

The company collects as much as 9 tonnes of used oil a month, catering for the recycling needs of the area, generating an income for themselves. They also contribute to raising environmental awareness in the region as the company is now providing individual citizens with smaller containers, so as to recycle cooking oil at home too.
