Prime Minister George Papandreou is in Brussels to participate at the Spring European Council (March 24-25) that will focus on the economy, growth and jobs. EU heads of state and government will also take stock of the situation in Libya and the EU's southern neighbourhood, and discuss assistance to bring relief to the affected population in Japan.

This afternoon, the Premier is scheduled to meet with his counterpart from the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), Nikola Gruevski.

Meanwhile, main opposition New Democracy (ND) party leader Antonis Samaras who is also in Brussels for the European People's Party (EPP) summit met yesterday with European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek. After the meeting, Samaras said that "our continuous and close contact with the European Parliament is necessary," adding that "Greece expects support as regards the Structural Funds, the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the major European infrastructure projects."

Supporting Innovative Enterprises

The Ministry of Regional Development and Competitiveness unveiled yesterday the New Innovative Entrepreneurship, a programme aimed at offering incentives for innovative enterprises, scheduled to begin next month. The programme will provide financial support for setting up new innovative enterprises, or for developing innovative products and services by existing businesses.

Public funding will cover up to 50% of project expenditure (with a minimum of 25% private funding). Financial support may reach up to €300,000 for manufacturing enterprises and €200,000 for other sectors, with the total budget set at €30 million. A wide range of business activities – including equipment, ICT, patent-copyright, human resources, product certification, prototype development, and promotion – is eligible for funding under the programme.

Olympic Air, Cyprus Airways Sign Agreement

Olympic Air has signed a code-sharing agreement with Cyprus Airways as both companies aim to boost their presence in South-Eastern Europe.

The agreement was signed in Nicosia and it covers both domestic and international routes. It will be effective as of March 27 for selective flights before being broadened to all flight routes of both companies as of April 15.

Celebrating Greek Independence

The anniversary is commemorated with customary parades and festivities across the country. Celebrations culminate with the annual military parade in Athens, in the presence of the country's political and military leadership.

In his message on the anniversary Hellenic Republic President Karolos Papoulias called for the unity of Hellenism to overcome today's challenges and for Greece to succeed in overcoming the economic crisis, adding that "is for all Greeks, wherever they are, a day of national uplifting and pride."

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs participates in this year's celebration with an exhibition of documents from the Greek revolution and copies of historical paintings from the National Gallery.

The exhibition, which was inaugurated by Minister Dimitris Droutsas on March 23, is organized by the Diplomatic and Historical Archive Department of the Ministry.

The Agia Lavra Monastery holds annual commemorative celebrations with the re-enactment of the gathering of the War of Independence captains and the raising of the Revolution's Banner. The island of Skiathos celebrates the anniversary with the custom of eothino (matins), with children waking up the island with hymns to symbolize the resurgence of the nation.

The Greek Diaspora participates in the celebrations with an array of events in cities in the USA, Australia, Germany and elsewhere.

The highlight is the annual Greek parade on New York's Fifth Avenue, which this year will take place on March 27. On the occassion of the March 25 anniversary, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced that all museums, archaeological sites and monuments will be open to the public with free admission. 

To honour the day, the Greek News Agenda team  has prepared a special issue on Greek Independence Day, which will be released tomorrow March 25.

The exhibition, titled Chamber Musicians, is the photographer's personal view on the nomadic musicians of the city of Thessaloniki.

  • Theodore Stathis: "Antigone"
The Athens Concert Hall is hosting, on March 30, distinguished American director Lee Breuer's official premiere of the opera Antigone by Theodore Stathis, based on a choreography by Ersi Pitta.

The performance is held under the auspices of Hellenic Republic President Karolos Papoulias and the proceeds will be go to the NGO Medecins sans Frontieres.

Tim Crouch Performances

The British Council in collaboration with the BIOS venue are presenting, for the first time in Greece, British author, actor and director, Tim Crouch, whose work is famous for deconstructing and exploring the art of performance.

Tim Crouch is coming to Athens to present two of his most successful plays, My Arm and An Oak Tree, from March 30 to April 2.

MUSIC
  • Current 93@ Gagarin205
The legendary Current 93 are coming to Athens for a sole performance. The British folk-goth experimental group will appear today, at Gagarin 205 venue.

DANCE
  • Cover Up
The dance trio of Ioannis Mandafounis, Fabrice Mazliah and May Zarhy – presents Cover Up: a contemporary dance performance that re-examines the perceived image of the body.

At the Onassis Cultural Centre Upper Stage from March 23 to 26.
  • Tango Fiesta
Athenian audience will have the opportunity to enjoy a veritable tango fiesta at the Badminton Theatre, from March 29 to April 3. Forever Tango - the creation of multi-awarded choreographer-director Luis Bravo –premiered in San Diego in 1990.
