World Environment Day 2011

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 05:10 AM PDT

World Environment Day (WED), observed every year on June 5, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness for the environment and enhances political attention and action. The theme for WED 2011 is Forests: Nature at your Service in line with the UN International Year of Forests 2011. Joining people around the world in an effort towards environmental action, Greeks will organise several events across the country dedicated to this special day.

For June 5, the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change has called upon all the Greeks across the country to send a strong message for the protection of the environment by cleaning forests, beaches and cities.  The National Cycling Team together with Attico Metro run a special bike ride, starting from downtown Athens and ending up in the southern coastal district of Faliro. Moreover, an environmental education programme for children is currently taking place at several museums and exhibition centres, running from June 1 to 15.

"The importance of the World Environment Day should be mentioned every day" said President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias in his message on WED, calling for sensitisation at national and international level before it is too late.

BoG Report on Climate Change

Tackling climate change and investing in Renewable Energy Sources (RES) is the answer to recession and unemployment, Prime Minister George Papandreou said on June 1, addressing an event hosted by the Bank of Greece (BoG), during which a report on the "environmental, economic and social impacts of climate change in Greece," was presented.

The Report represents a first attempt at a comprehensive study of the impact of climate change for Greece – in particular of the cost of climate change that would be borne by the Greek economy, the cost of implementing adaptation measures, as well the cost of moving to a low-emissions economy, in the context of the global effort to mitigate climate change. The study produced climate projections for Greece, in a detailed geographic breakdown up to the year 2100.

Referring to RES, the Premier said that investments in this sector will produce 100,000 job positions in Greece by 2020, while investments in RES will reach € 16.4 billion within the next decade.

"Already 22 foreign and Greek companies have expressed interest in the huge 200MW photovoltaic park in Kozani, NW Greece," he pointed out.

Western Greece’s Oil and Gas Reserves Potential

The Greek government will launch a tender for oil exploration contracts in the Ionian Sea and southern Crete in 2012, after the completion of seismic research in these regions, Environment, Energy and Climate Change Deputy minister Yiannis Maniatis said addressing the 2nd annual Mediterranean Oil & Gas Conference, in Athens on May 30.

Maniatis also left the door open for possible synergies between the natural gas pipelines of Turkey-Greece-Italy and TAP (Turkey-Greece-Albania-Italy), while he mentioned the role of Russia in ensuring energy supplies for Europe, in the aftermath of the crisis in north Africa.

Earlier in May, at an event organized by the Athens Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Maniatis had pointed out the need to capitalize on Greece's oil and gas reserves, as there is strong indication that western Greece's oil and gas deposits suffice for sustainable exploitation.

A three-day conference on Greece and the Mediterranean Diet: Innovative Actions-Optimum Practices is taking place on June 3-5 in the harbour town of Koroni, in the southern Peloponnese region of Messinia.

The conference will mark the recognition of the Mediterranean Diet by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage of humanity following a joint initiative by Greece, Spain, Italy and Morocco last year.

The Mediterranean diet is characterized by a nutritional model that has remained constant over time and space, consisting mainly of olive oil, cereals, fresh or dried fruit and vegetables, a moderate amount of fish, dairy and meat, and many condiments and spices, all accompanied by wine or infusions, always respecting beliefs of each community.

However, the Mediterranean diet encompasses more than just food.

It promotes social interaction, since communal meals are the cornerstone of social customs and festive events. It has given rise to a considerable body of knowledge, songs, maxims, tales and legends.

What do Socrates and Strauss-Kahn have in common?

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 05:10 AM PDT

In an article posted by keeptalkinggreece, an ironic relationship between Dominique Straus-Kahn and Socrates is being observed. Socrates was a philosopher who lived 2,400 years ago.

Dominique Straus-Kahn is a banker and was the Head of International Monetary Fund until he got trapped in custody a few weeks ago.

What binds the two men is their lawyer. Strauss-Kahn's defense attorney is Benjamin Brafman, a "contemporary Socrates" who defended himself during an historical re-enactment trial, titled The Trial of Socrates, presented by the Onassis Foundation (USA) and held at the Federal Court of New York.

"Chief Judge Jacobs handed down the decision to acquit Socrates" thus allowing in a strange turn of fate "Socrates/Brafman to slip back to his defense attorney role and get a new client, Dominique Strauss-Kahn."
