  • Exports to China Up
Greek exports to China increased by 55.9% in 2010, Regional Development & Competitiveness Minister Michalis Chryssohoidis said yesterday, addressing a high-profile Greek-Chinese Business Forum, organised by the Hellenic-Chinese Chamber and the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery & Electronics Products (CCCME) in Athens.

Chryssohoidis further invited Chinese entrepreneurs to take advantage of a new investment environment created in Greece and develop joint actions with local enterprises in fields where both countries have increased know-how, especially in ocean-going shipping, tourism, energy, commerce and constructions.

On his part, Zhang Yujing, the president of CCCME, said bilateral trade now totals € 4.35 billion, adding that 86 Chinese entrepreneurs from 61 companies are participating in the Athens forum with the aim to sign agreements with representatives of 187 Greek businesses.

  • Tourism Boost
Addressing the same event, Culture & Tourism Minister Pavlos Yeroulanos spoke of a 75% increase in the number of Chinese nationals visiting Greece although, in absolute figures, the numbers remain low.

He further stressed Greece's keen interest in attracting visitors from the vast country and the efforts being made in this direction: streamlining and simplifying visa-issuing procedures for Chinese nationals; a permanent air link connecting Beijing and Athens as well as a better understanding by Greek entrepreneurs of the vast Chinese market and Chinese society.

Finally, Yeroulanos said the ministry has already been implementing two joint campaigns in China, a Greece-Turkey promotion and a Greece-Israel one, while talks are being held with Italian and Egyptian tourism authorities for similar ventures.

Greece: First Auction of Unused CO2 allowances

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 03:02 AM PDT

Greece will hold the first auction for 10 million tonnes of unused carbon emission allowances via the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE) by the end of this month, Environment, Energy and Climate Change ministry announced on June 2. The auctions will be carried out gradually, following the signing of a contact with the ASE. The emission rights on auction are from the allowances set aside for new units in 2008-2012.

These were held back to be given to new industrial units that were forecast to begin operating during this period, after the initial allocation of carbon rights by each state. As a result of the economic crisis, however, there have been fewer investments in Greece and rights for 10 million tonnes of CO2 emissions remained unclaimed and will now be auctioned off.
