Cabinet Approves Implementation Law

The text of the law for the implementation of the Medium-Term Fiscal Strategic Programme was approved by the cabinet, during a meeting yesterday. Addressing the cabinet, Prime Minister George Papandreou said that "the vote of confidence given to the government constitutes a reaffirmation of the mandate to continue the tough effort we have started 20 months ago."

Papandreou also stressed that the government is trying to ensure that the country will receive the necessary funds and make the debt sustainable in a tough, unstable and often uneasy international environment. Today, the Premier is leaving for Brussels to participate in the two-day EU summit.

According to a press release by the Finance Ministry, at yesterday's meeting government Vice-president and Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos briefed the Government Committee and the Cabinet on the state of negotiations with the Troika on the finalization of the charts of the Medium-Term Fiscal Strategy, the content of the Implementation Law as well as the update of the Memorandum.

On June 27-28 the Medium-Term Fiscal Strategy will be discussed during a parliamentary plenary session, while on June 28, the Standing Committee will discuss the Implementation Law which must then pass by June 30.

MFA on Flotilla Heading for Gaza

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement yesterday, urging Greek citizens not to participate in the flotilla that will attempt to break the Gaza blockade.

"Bearing in mind the UN Secretary General's request, the Israeli government's stated intention not to allow vessels to approach the Gaza coast and the immediate danger to human life entailed in participation in the operation in question, particularly in light of last year's events – the Foreign Ministry urges Greek citizens as well as Greek-registered vessels not to participate in the new flotilla headed for the Gaza port," reads the statement.

National Library Goes Digital

Greece's National Library goes digital.

The Ministry of Education & Religious Affairs has launched its digitization policy for the National Library as well as a project which will eventually connect all of the country's digital libraries under the umbrella of a Single National Libraries System.

The system will be supported by a single search engine and national library register for all bibliographical items found in the new Hellenic digital libraries network.

  • A great open-air summer party
Some of the hottest names in the world and domestic music scene join forces in Athens and Thessaloniki on June 28 and 29 respectively.

The show - based on choric and other songs from the eleven comedies of Aristophanes, with intense Dionysian element and contemporary sounds, but based on ancient music, Byzantine melody and our folklore tradition, is on at the Hellenic Cosmos Atrium until June 25.
