Snap Government Reshuffle

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 03:17 AM PDT

Through a televised public address, yesterday, June 15, Prime Minister George Papandreou announced his decision to reshuffle the government and seek the Parliament's vote of confidence on Sunday.
"Tomorrow I will form a new government and shortly after, I shall seek a vote of confidence. I will continue on the same course.

This is the road of duty, […] a national duty, not a partisan one. In my life I have learnt to fight for the country, the economy, the citizens, and principles. Let us all assume our responsibilities to the country," said the Premier.

The televised message was preceded by a general strike called by Greece's two largest trade union federations, a large public rally on Syntagma Square as well as deliberations between the ruling and the main opposition party concerning the possibility of forming a unity government that would include personalities of general acceptance.

Main opposition leader Antonis Samaras, in a statement following the Premier's address, called for an early general election. "Mr. Papandreou made his choices and the people can judge. […]

We are continuing the struggle in ND for a change in policy; and a change of the political scene itself. It is now clear that the only one who can provide a solution is the Greek people," he said.

Twenty highly-qualified Greek-American students aged 18 to 26 are currently visiting Greece in the framework of the Heritage Greece Programme of the National Hellenic Society (NHS) in Washington.

The Heritage Greece participants will be spending two weeks together experiencing Greece, finding out more about their Greek identity and heritage and completing a tailored-made course that is educational, meaningful and fun.

The programme's itinerary also includes visits to important archaeological sites, tours of the Greek countryside, spending time with a host Greek family, Greek cooking and dancing lessons.

"Our hope for these young Greek Americans is that they will connect with their Greek identity, discover the importance of Greek heritage, and share that experience with each other and with their student peer group in Greece," said Theophanis Economidis, chair of NHS Programme Committee.

The programme is fully-funded by the NHS and runs in collaboration with the American College of Greece. It began on June 8 and ends on June 24.

The itinerary, approximately 1,200 kilometers long, will take them through Athens, Boeotia (Viotia), Fthiotida and back to the Peloponnese, after 17 special stages.

This year the organizing committee has decided to conduct a night-special stage - the first to take place in a World Rally Championship event after many years.
