Prime Minister George Papandreou pledged Greece's support for Ban Ki Moon's bid for a second term as United Nations General Secretary.

Papandreou stressed that Ban has achieved "the promotion of the role of the UN, helping in particular the most vulnerable, as well as enriching the international agenda of the Organisation with new ambitious targets."

  • FM addresses World Economic Forum
Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas participated at the World Economic Forum on Europe and Central Asia, themed on Expanding the Frontiers of Innovation, which is taking place in Vienna (June 8-9).

Droutsas participated in a panel discussion on a Vision for a sustainable future. He referred to the structural reforms being implemented in Greece and the results achieved so far, including a 5% budget deficit reduction, and social security and tax reforms. He further expanded on the Greek government's keen interest in promoting a "Green development" model based on sustainable development and renewable energy sources (RES), and investing in the various comparative advantages Greece has in the field.

On the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, Droutsas met with his Austrian counterpart Michael Spindelegger with whom he discussed the Western Balkans and their European prospect, the situation in the Middle East and northern Africa, and the economic situation in Greece. Today, the FM will be attending the Libya Contact Group meeting, in Abu Dhabi.

  • Deputy FM @ BSEC meeting
Deputy Foreign Minister Spyros Kouvelis participated at a Meeting of the Council of Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) in Bucharest. Addressing the event, Kouvelis informed his audience of recent developments concerning the BSEC Hellenic Development Fund.

"We already have the outcome of the first call for proposals launched last February in the field of the renewable energy sources. Six (6) development projects have been selected out of twenty (20) submitted by organizations of BSEC Member States (Albania, Azerbaijan, Greece, Moldova, Romania, Russia and Turkey), as well as by BSEC Related Bodies (ICBSS and BSEC Business Council), by the means of a transparent evaluation procedure. These projects will be financed by the HDF with the total amount of € 400,000," Kouvelis said.

LA Greek Film Festival 2011

The Los Angeles Greek Film Festival 2011 (LAGFF) is taking place in the City of Angels from June 9 to 12.

In its fifth edition, LAGFF showcases new films by Greek filmmakers, aiming to promote Greek cinema and cultural exchange while bridging the gap between Greek filmmakers and Hollywood.

"This year's films represent all facets of Greek life – humor, music, wine, erotica, and family… with a twist! Los Angeles audience will not be disappointed," says Ersi Danou, LAGFF co-founder.

The festival opens with Lea Binzer's documentary Pelican's Watch about a small winemaking community on the island of Santorini and its battles to stop vineyards being sold off for development. The screening will be followed by a reception featuring some of the top Greek wines.

On June 10, the musical documentary film My Sweet Canary, a musical and cinematic journey through the life and music of the "queen of Rebetico music," Roza Eskenazy, directed by Roy Sher will premiere at the LAGFF.

The festival closes with the world premiere of Burning Heads by Giorgos Siougas, and the Orpheus Awards ceremony. The festival will be held at the Laemmle's Sunset 5 in West Hollywood, while the closing night at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills.

  • DESTE Prize 2011
The Museum of Cycladic Art is presenting until October 30, an exhibition showcasing the works by the 6 shortlisted artists for the DESTE Prize 2011.

The DESTE Prize was established in 1999 and is awarded every two years to a Greek artist living in Greece or abroad.

An international jury of 6 will select and announce the winner of this year's DESTE Prize on September 14, 2011.

On the occasion of the Special Olympics World Summer Games ATHENS 2011 the Herakleidon Museum presents until July 5 the exhibition Special Olympics - Special Artists with paintings, drawings, watercolors and pyrographs created by the pupils of Workshops for Special Education and Vocational Training of Ιrakleio, Attica, especially for this exhibition.

  • Music from around the world @ Technopolis
The musical awakening of the Arab world is the theme of this year's Sounds of the World Festival, which is taking place in Athens, on June 17, at the City of Athens Technopolis venue.

Tunisian Lamia Bedioui with her five Greek musicians, the Orchestre Med Fusion from Tunisia, who contributed actively to the reawakening of the youth of their country by composing The Jasmine Revolution, and El-Tanbura, one of the most popular groups in Egypt, who performed before the protesters at Cairo's Tahrir Square.
