Canadian PM in Greece

Posted: 30 May 2011 03:03 AM PDT

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife Laureen concluded an official visit to Greece (May 28-29).

In a joint press conference, Prime Minister George Papandreou highlighted the good bilateral relations, which the two countries have fostered over the years, as well as Greek expats' contribution to this accomplishment.

Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas and Canadian President of the Treasury Board, Tony Clement signed a bilateral agreement on youth mobility.

Prime Minister George Papandreou accompanied his Canadian counterpart to the city of Kalavryta, symbolic cradle of the Greek Independence struggle and theatre of a brutal World War II massacre of the local population by the Nazi occupation forces in massive reprisal operations. The Canadian delegation paid homage to the victims by laying a wreath at the WWII memorial.

  • PM: "Greece Comes First"
"Greece comes first," said Prime Minister George Papandreou yesterday from Kalavryta in the Peloponnese, stressing that he is determined to do his duty without being interested in petty political party games, or the political cost.

"We are in the first year of a three-year effort," he noted, adding that he is optimistic Greece would have a primary budget surplus by next year.

Meanwhile, speaking after the meeting of political party leaders on May 27, Papandreou stated that "we have just one objective: To save our nation and to change it fundamentally," noting that he is open to further consultations if they are conducive to the national effort. He also noted categorically that national elections will be held in 2013, ruling out speculations over snap elections.

EDEN Award Goes to Delphi

Posted: 30 May 2011 03:03 AM PDT

The municipality of Delphi received the 2011 EDEN award as top sustainable tourism destination in Greece.

The European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) is a project promoting sustainable tourism across the European Union and each year it is centred on a particular theme, chosen by the European Commission together with the relevant national tourism bodies.

This year's theme was Tourism and Regeneration of Physical Sites and the municipality of Delphi topped the list for the regeneration project of Harmena neighbourhood in Amfissa. The traditional neighbourhood of Harmena was known as the "home of tanners" (tambakika in Greek) as for many centuries it was the place where leather-dressing was taking place.

The Municipality of Delphi along with the winners from the other participating counties will be honoured in a special ceremony hosted by the European Commission in the fall of 2011.

Museum of the Kalavrita Holocaust

Posted: 30 May 2011 03:03 AM PDT

The Municipal Museum of the Kalavrita Holocaust is housed at the historic Primary School of the town, the place which was bound to be the theatre where the first act of the Kalavryta tragedy was played. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century on donation by Greek benefactor Andreas Syggros, and was completely burnt down in a fire set by the Nazis on December 13, 1943.

After the liberation, the school was rebuilt on its original blueprints. In 1986 it was declared a historic monument by the Ministry of Culture, and today it houses the museum of the town which serves as a centre for the promotion, through education, of peace in the world and cooperation among peoples.

The central door of the museum remains forever closed, while at the town's square the clock has stopped at 14:34, the time of Kalavryta massacre.

The conference titled Greece's 30 years in the EU: Past History and Future Prospects, was held at the University of Geneva, Switzerland and focused on Greece's economic situation.

  • Major Cycladic Art exhibition in Istanbul
The first-ever Cycladic Art exhibition in Turkey was inaugurated on May 23 and will run through August 28, at the noted Sakip Sabanci Museum, in Istanbul.

The exhibition titled Across: The Cylades and Western Anatolia During The 3rd Millennium BC (Karşıdan Karşıya) features 68 artifacts that travelled to Turkey from Greece, on loan from the collections of the Museum of Cycladic Art and the National Archaeological Museum.

The collection of artifacts, including Cycladic figurines, clay pots and marble and bronze items from the two Greek museums made the journey to Istanbul following an approval by Greece's Central Archaeological Council (KAS).

Cycladic Art Museum director, Professor Stampolidis said the exhibition covers the period from 3200 BC to 2600 BC. Two hundred artifacts from Turkey on display -coming from Turkish state foundations such as the Archaeological Museums of Istanbul, Izmir and Troy, among others- underline the similarities and differences between the two regions, both cultural and commercial, at the peak of the Cycladic civilisation in the 3rd millennium BC.

Culture and Tourism Minister Pavlos Yeroulanos who attended the inauguration event, welcomed the first major collaboration between Greek and Turkish museums.

A Day @ the Acropolis Museum

Posted: 27 May 2011 02:05 AM PDT

Since April 16, the Acropolis Museum has launched a new program called A day at the Acropolis Museum, through which a range of activities addressed to both adults and children is offered to visitors.

Families are invited to explore the museum through games – one of which involves searching for 12 different representations of the Goddess Athena amongst the exhibits of the permanent collection.

For this reason, the museum has installed special children's captions for the recovery of the 12 exhibits included in the game. Families can borrow a family backpack from the Museum's Information Desk.

Other activities on offer include video presentations, gallery talks, as well as watching conservators do the delicate work of cleaning the Caryatids with advanced laser technology.

Spring Athens Flower Show

Posted: 27 May 2011 02:11 AM PDT

The Athens Flower Show, featuring more than 600 varieties of ornamental plants and flowers that Athenians and visitors can admire or even buy, opened on May 20 at Kotzia Square opposite the Athens Town Hall and will run until June 5. The flower show is being organised jointly by the City of Athens and the Attica Plant Nursery Association.

Athens Mayor George Kaminis said the municipality was seeking to raise environmental awareness via the flower show, by promoting issues such as recycling and active participation in keeping the city clean.

To this end, the Flower Show will for the first time also include an Environment Week lasting from May 28 until June 5, with a series of events and recycling as its central theme.

The municipality will also have a pavilion for the Urban Fauna Service to promote protection of stray animals, where members of the public will be able to adopt stray puppies. Another aim of the flower show is to promote use of local plant species and raising awareness and public participation in the planting of more greenery in Athens.
