On May 24, Government Vice President Theodoros Pangalos was the keynote speaker in a roundtable discussion on Greece's 30th anniversary since the country joined the European Union. The conference titled Greece's 30 years in the EU: Past History and Future Prospects, was held at the University of Geneva, Switzerland and focused on Greece's economic situation.

Pangalos noted that present predicaments should not overshadow a 30-year history and that, although the situation spells painful measures for Greece, the support it has been receiving from the European Union does not have the form of a blank check.

  • Major Cycladic Art exhibition in Istanbul
The first-ever Cycladic Art exhibition in Turkey was inaugurated on May 23 and will run through August 28, at the noted Sakip Sabanci Museum, in Istanbul.

The exhibition titled Across: The Cylades and Western Anatolia During The 3rd Millennium BC (Karşıdan Karşıya) features 68 artifacts that travelled to Turkey from Greece, on loan from the collections of the Museum of Cycladic Art and the National Archaeological Museum.

The collection of artifacts, including Cycladic figurines, clay pots and marble and bronze items from the two Greek museums made the journey to Istanbul following an approval by Greece's Central Archaeological Council (KAS).

Cycladic Art Museum director, Professor Stampolidis said the exhibition covers the period from 3200 BC to 2600 BC. Two hundred artifacts from Turkey on display -coming from Turkish state foundations such as the Archaeological Museums of Istanbul, Izmir and Troy, among others- underline the similarities and differences between the two regions, both cultural and commercial, at the peak of the Cycladic civilisation in the 3rd millennium BC.

Culture and Tourism Minister Pavlos Yeroulanos who attended the inauguration event, welcomed the first major collaboration between Greek and Turkish museums.

A Day @ the Acropolis Museum

Posted: 27 May 2011 02:05 AM PDT

Since April 16, the Acropolis Museum has launched a new program called A day at the Acropolis Museum, through which a range of activities addressed to both adults and children is offered to visitors.

Families are invited to explore the museum through games – one of which involves searching for 12 different representations of the Goddess Athena amongst the exhibits of the permanent collection.

For this reason, the museum has installed special children's captions for the recovery of the 12 exhibits included in the game. Families can borrow a family backpack from the Museum's Information Desk.

Other activities on offer include video presentations, gallery talks, as well as watching conservators do the delicate work of cleaning the Caryatids with advanced laser technology.

Posted: 27 May 2011 02:11 AM PDT

The Athens Flower Show, featuring more than 600 varieties of ornamental plants and flowers that Athenians and visitors can admire or even buy, opened on May 20 at Kotzia Square opposite the Athens Town Hall and will run until June 5. The flower show is being organised jointly by the City of Athens and the Attica Plant Nursery Association.

Athens Mayor George Kaminis said the municipality was seeking to raise environmental awareness via the flower show, by promoting issues such as recycling and active participation in keeping the city clean.

To this end, the Flower Show will for the first time also include an Environment Week lasting from May 28 until June 5, with a series of events and recycling as its central theme.

The municipality will also have a pavilion for the Urban Fauna Service to promote protection of stray animals, where members of the public will be able to adopt stray puppies. Another aim of the flower show is to promote use of local plant species and raising awareness and public participation in the planting of more greenery in Athens.
