  • Humanitarian Aid to Libya
Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas met, on May 14, with UN Secretary General's special envoy for Libya Abdul Ilah Khatib for talks on the ongoing situation in the country.

"Greece fully supports the efforts toward a peaceful solution of the Libya crisis" Droutsas told reporters following the talks and announced that Greece will send officials and humanitarian aid to the rebels in Benghazi.

According to Droutsas, a vessel with humanitarian aid and a medical team is due to dock in Benghazi this week, while a delegation of Foreign Ministry officials would be based in the eastern Libyan city to act as a liaison with the National Transitional Council (NTC).

"We cannot reach a solution in Libya through military means alone" said Droutsas, reiterating that a political solution is necessary and Greece will continue to contribute in this direction. On his part, Abdul Ilah Khatib said that "Greece is an important player and we all value the role it plays in the region, […] as well as appreciate its willingness to contribute in improving the humanitarian situation."  
  • Greece-Russia: Bilateral Talks
Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas also met with Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Alexander Grushko, who is visiting Athens on the occasion of a conference on European Security jointly organised by Greece and Russia.

After praising the excellent bilateral relations, which are based on the profound friendship of the two peoples, Droutsas said that Greece is working systematically to promote close cooperation between Russia and the EU, as well as NATO.

Concerning the visa-issuing procedure for Russian tourists wishing to visit Greece, Droutsas said that Greek Consular Missions in Russia are processing the documents faster than any of the Schengen countries.

On his part, Grushko underlined that Greece has played an important role in introducing a new spirit in the Russia-NATO relations, adding that the Greek-Russian transactions reached €7 billion last year breaking a new record.

EUscreen Presented

The results of the European programme EUscreen, which allows millions of Internet users to have access to the television heritage and history of Europe through video image provided by audiovisual archives and broadcasters are presented in the website euscreen.eu.

Both the program and the Greek website – which is under construction by the Hellenic National Audiovisual Archive (HeNAA), founding partner of the consortium EUscreen - were presented, on May 5, at a special event which was held at the Press Centre of the Secretariat General of Communication- Secretariat General of Information (SGC-SCI).

EUscreen is a Best Practice Network funded by the eContentplusprogramme of the European Communities, aiming to achieve a highly interoperable digitised collection of television material. The project consortium is made up of 28 partners and 9 associate partners from 20 European countries.

The EUscreen project will feed video footage into the Europeana – the European digital library which gives users direct access to some 2 million digital objects, including film material, photos, paintings, sounds, maps, manuscripts, books, newspapers and archival papers, in 21 languages.

Int’l Museum Day 2011

The worldwide community of museums is celebrating International Museum Day on May 18.

The theme of this year's celebration is Museums and Memory: as museums store memory and tell stories, International Museum Day 2011 will be an occasion for visitors to discover and rediscover individual and collective memory.

Admission to all museums and archaeological sites in Greece will be free of charge on May 18. The day will be celebrated in 46 museums and archaeological sites throughout Greece, with numerous events and activities, such as exhibitions, seminars, lectures, tours, educational programmes.

The central event of the celebrations in Greece will take place at the 'Filio Haidemenou' Museum of Asia Minor Hellenism, which was inaugurated in 2007.

The museum showcases 500 out of some 1,500 objects and photographs that were brought to the country by ethnic Greeks expelled from Asia Minor after 1922, and were collected by the late Filio Haidemenou.

The Acropolis Museum celebrates International Museum Day with free entry for all visitors, extended opening hours from 8 am to midnight and performances by the City of Athens Orchestra in the Museum's courtyard at 8:30 pm.

In the atrium of the Athens National Archaeological Museum, the Hellenic Broadcasting Company (ERT)'s Choir will perform Manos Hadjidakis' Magnus Eroticus. On Sunday, May 22, the museum is offering its younger visitors a special educational programme - for children age 7 to 11- showcasing the Ritual of Wedding in Classical Athens.

Visitors to the Benaki Museum will have the opportunity - under the project Artefact histories: How to access the documents of the Benaki Museum - to follow the course of an artefact from the time it is entered into the Museum management system up to how this is presented to the public and how to disseminate the kind of cultural knowledge it represents.

At 7:00 p.m., on May 18, the director of the National Gallery, Marina Lambraki-Plaka, will guide visitors through the exhibition A Tribute to Yannis Moralis.
