Injured, poisoned or orphaned wild animals from all over Greece may find shelter at the Hellenic Wildlife Hospital (HWH) which is located on the island of Aegina. Operating since 1984, the HWH is the oldest and largest wildlife rehabilitation center in Southern Europe, dedicated to the treatment and rehabilitation of all species of wildlife indigenous to Greece as well as to educating and informing the public on wildlife protection issues and taking preventive action.

Travelling to Saronic Islands: Aegina

Posted: 20 May 2011 02:20 AM PDT

The island of Aegina, in close proximity to the port of Piraeus, is a place full of natural beauties and great history.

Built amphitheatrically overlooking the sea, Aegina -the island's capital and main port- is an attractive town with colourful neoclassical buildings, looking more impressive at sunset.

Having been chosen as the seat of the first provisional government of Greece during the revolution (1827-1829), it houses several landmark buildings, such as the Government House and Markello's Venetian tower.

In the northern part of the island, lies the most important archaeological site of the area, the temple of the ancient goddess Aphaea, patron deity of Aegina.

Weather permitting, the visitor has visual access to both the temple of Poseidon in Sounio and the Acropolis - the 3 temples forming an equilateral triangle.

To the east is the island's most popular seaside resort, Aghia Marina, set in the midst of pine woods.
