Hellenic Republic President Karolos Papoulias and Serbia's President Boris Tadic inaugurated in Belgrade on April 29 the landmark Nebojsa Tower, the site where Greek Independence struggle hero Rigas Velestinlis (also known as Feraios) was put to death by the Ottomans in 1798.

In his speech, Papoulias stressed Feraios' role as a 'forerunner of the idea of European unification,' the roots of which lay in the idea of freedom based on education, equality before the law, justice and peace, friendship and cooperation between countries of the Balkans and the Mediterranean.

The tower has recently undergone renovation which was funded by Greece and the municipality of Belgrade. The restoration work was carried out over two years and cost € 1.8 million.

The tower will serve as a museum featuring exhibits related to the life and work of Rigas Feraios, the Serbian struggle for independence from Ottoman rule as well as exhibits related the tower's use as a prison at the end of 18th – beginning of 19th centuries.

Nejbosa Tower is a medieval structure built by Hungarians on the ruins of an older Roman tower dating from the 1st century A.D, which was destroyed and rebuilt several times.
Rigas Feraios was imprisoned there for roughly seven months before he was put to death, thus becoming one of the first martyrs for Greece's independence.

Apostolos Santas, who together with Manolis Glezos climbed atop the Acropolis Hill and took down the swastika in the early morning hours of May 31, 1941 - a defiant and extraordinarily symbolic act of resistance at the beginning of the Axis occupation of Greece (1941-44) - died on April 30, at the age of 89.

"It was the first gasp of resistance … Two 18-year-olds toyed with history; they saw a symbol and decided to become symbols, themselves," read a Greek Parliament resolution issued at plenum session honouring the two men, in 2008.
