Prime Minister George Papandreou received a letter of gratitude from his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao for the assistance Greece has offered in the evacuation of thousands of Chinese nationals from Libya and their accommodation on the island of Crete.

The Chinese premier cited the "deep and sincere appreciation of the Chinese people" towards the Greek government, stressing "the spirit of mutual assistance demonstrated by the Greek people in times of crisis."

Meanwhile, the evacuation process from Libya continues successfully with two more Greek ferries docking yesterday at Iraklion port on the island of Crete, carrying more than 4,200 third-country evacuees, mostly Chinese. An other ferry carrying some 2,000 Chinese workers -out of 13,000 in total- from Bengazi is expected in Crete today.

  • High Profile Meetings
Maritime Affairs, Islands and Fisheries Minister Yiannis Diamantidis concluded a week-long official visit to China, aimed at enhancing economic cooperation with China, especially in the shipping industry.

In China, Diamantidis had a series of high-profile meetings with officials in Beijing and Shanghai, including with China's Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang, Deputy Foreign Minister Fu Ying, Deputy Transport Minister Weng Mengyong, and the heads of three of the biggest Chinese banking groups as well as COSCO Group President and CEO, Captain Wei Jiafou.
  • Agreements Signed
The Greek and Chinese sides signed an "Action Plan" in the field of transport stepping up co-operation, according to the Memorandum of Understanding, signed by the two states when the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited Greece last year.

The initiative foresees the investment of $5 billion for Greek ship owners to build new vessels in Chinese shipyards – an amount that can be raised to $10 billion- as well as bilateral cooperation in maritime education.

Talks also focused on environmental protection technology, anti-piracy, ship financing, shipping cooperation and staff training.

COSCO Group President and CEO, Captain Wei Jiafou, during a speech at a dinner held in honour of Diamantidis, compared shipping to a maritime Great Wall of China, linking Greece with the East-Asian country.

The Greek and COSCO delegations exchanged views in terminal investment, ship building, and logistics services, as well as other issues of common interest for advancing business collaboration between COSCO and its Greek counterparts.

The National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) will head a European research project involving a consortium of 18 major construction companies and institutions for the development of a building with a zero carbon footprint.

The Hydrogen 2 Sustainable Building (H2SusBuild) is envisaged as an "intelligent, self-sustained and zero CO2 emission hybrid energy system" that integrates H2 technology with renewable energy systems.

The building will be designed to cover all its electricity needs from RES such as wind power or solar power, while any 'extra' green electricity generated will be used to hydrolyse water for the production and storage of H2 that can also be used to meet the building's energy needs.
