  • Evacuation operation successful
Three military C-130 transport planes that had been sent to Libya to help bring back Greek and Cypriot citizens wishing to leave the Arab country landed at Athens International Airport just after midnight.
Meanwhile, several Greek-owned ships have been chartered to help with the evacuation of hundreds of citizens of various nationalities.

Already, about 4,000 Chinese nationals evacuated from Libya arrived yesterday in the island of Crete where they will stay until arrangements are made for their return to China. The passenger ferries that carried them to Crete are returning to Libya to continue the operation.
  • Migration worries
Interior Ministers from 6 EU Mediterranean countries (Greece, France, Italy, Spain Malta, Cyprus) met in Rome on February 23 to discuss ways to deal with the repercussions of a possible migrational wave towards Europe following the turmoil in North Africa and the Middle East.

In a joint statement, the six ministers warned of the danger of "uncontrolled flows of illegal immigrants and asylum seekers into Europe, with serious consequences and potential risks to internal security," urging that a common EU asylum system should be in place by 2012.

New school for the Greek Diaspora in Mozambique

Posted: 25 Feb 2011 02:10 AM PST

A Greek school has been operating Mozambique, since the beginning of 2011. The school, which was officially inaugurated on January 31, is located in the country's capital Maputo.

The efforts to build the new school began around three years ago, with the appointment of a teacher from Greece, Lambrini Kolaiti – Anjulet, who has been teaching the 22 children (aged between 7 and 18) studying in the school - among which two natives and two of Russian descent.

In 2010, three of her students excelled in their examinations for the certificate of attainment in Greek language, conducted by the famous Greek SAHETI school in Johannesburg.

Once a thriving ethnic group of 2,000, the Greek community in Mozambique numbers today around 70 families in Maputo and few others in the country's second largest city Beira. The migration of Greeks to Sub-Saharan Africa has its origins in the late 19th century.

Feta and Co: A User’s Guide to Greek Cheese

Posted: 25 Feb 2011 02:05 AM PST

With the highest per capita cheese consumption in Europe, Greeks are a cheese-loving people par excellence, more so than France and Italy. And there's much more to Greek cheese than feta.

Terrain, vegetation, microclimate, local animal breeds, and rich tradition have produced a multitude of local cheeses, many of which are exported all around the world. Eighteen types have gained Product of Designated Origin (PDO) status by the European Union, gradually acquiring international fame among connoisseurs and consumers.

Feta is the star of the brine cheeses, but many more contend for a place on the table.

Kalathaki, a Lemnos island delicacy, is milder and smaller than feta, with a rich scent, while Western Macedonia batzos has a strong peppery taste and is ideal for grilling, with a drizzle of lemon juice.

Crete's star cheese is undoubtedly the graviera : the sheep-milk cheese is a staple of Cretan diet, perfect for platters to accompany wine.

Soft PDO cheeses include the kopanisti, a sharp-taste, salty cream cheese from the Cyclades islands, suitable for dips and canapés.

Katiki, produced in the Domokos area in Central Greece, with similar taste and texture, but much lighter is a dieter's dream, with an average of 10% fat.

Last but not least, two favourites from the Thessaly region: the metsovone is a cow's milk smoked cheese, produced in Metsovo (hence the name), that is suspended from the ceiling during production.

Manouri is made from full-fat milk and fresh cream that provides its unique smooth, buttery taste that can be combined with savoury or sweet tastes.
