Prime Minister George Papandreou met with European Council President Herman Van Rompuy in Brussels yesterday. Briefing the press after the meeting, Government Spokesman George Petalotis said that talks focused on current economic issues and developments in Northern Africa, with the premier outlining Greece's views. He added that negotiations regarding the economic crisis and the upcoming EU Summits continue. Today, Papandreou will be in Paris to meet with French President Nicola Sarkozy.
Earlier yesterday, Papandreou addressed the Cabinet and briefed the Ministers ahead of the upcoming EU Summit, as well as on the meetings with opposition party leaders held on March 8. He also referred to the Greek proposals on Eurobond and the tax on fiscal transactions, which were ratified by the European Parliament on March 8. |
Posted: 10 Mar 2011 02:35 AM PST Deputy Foreign Minister Dimitris Dollis will hold talks with Libyan envoy Mohamed Tahir Siala today in Athens. According to a Foreign Ministry announcement, the meeting is taking place in agreement with Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas and High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and Vice-president of the European Commission Catherine Ashton, ahead of an extraordinary informal Foreign Affairs Council on March 10. Foreign Ministry's Secretary General Yiannis-Alexis Zepos will also participate in the meeting, after which there will be no statements to the journalists. |
Posted: 10 Mar 2011 02:37 AM PST Greece signed the Optional Protocol of the Convention against Torture (OPCAT) and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment on March 3, 2011. The OPCAT, which was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 2002 and entered into force on June 2006, was signed by the Permanent Representative of Greece to the United Nations, Ambassador Anastassis Mitsialis. The Optional Protocol comes as an important addition to the 1984 United Nations Convention against Torture and establishes an international inspection system for places of detention modelled on the system which has existed in Europe since 1987. |
Greece: Attracting Tourism Development Posted: 10 Mar 2011 02:35 AM PST Greece ranked 29th among a total of 139 countries in a survey conducted by the World Economic Forum (WEF) regarding competitiveness for the tourism sector. The Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report is issued annually and grades countries on a total of 60 indicators, including policy regulations, resources, safety, prices and environmental protection. According to the survey, Greece benefits from its rich cultural resources (ranked 25th), excellent health and hygiene (20th), and a top-notch tourism infrastructure (5th). Further on, the report refers to the country's strong national affinity for tourism (compared with many other European countries), including a generally open and positive attitude toward tourists (26th). Benaki Museum is presenting an exhibition titled Yannis Moralis: Architectural Compositions, featuring preliminary drawings for the architectural compositions that Yannis Moralis (1916-2009) - one of the most distinguished 20th century Greek artists - bestowed, on the Benaki Museum, in 2009. The exhibition which runs until April 30 is considered to be the first complete presentation of the Moralis' architectural creations.
The exhibition Intermediate Times with works by Nina Pappas, is taking place until April 9, at the ABOUT venue in Athens, featuring works themed on waiting times in public urban spaces. The exhibition features an archive of photographs, drawings and videos of dialogue transcript is on display. DANCE Renowned American tap dancer Heather Cornell dances at the Hellenic American Union Auditorium, on March 10, with the Greek virtuoso tap dancer Thanos Daskalopoulos, with live music by leading representatives of the Greek jazz scene.
Groups from Greece and Cyprus will have the opportunity to present the choreographies as part of an international contest that takes place in 25 countries around the world. The event takes place at the Athens American Community Schools, on March 12. MUSIC
Savina Yannatou collaborates with Mediterranean-inspired Canadian ensemble Constantinople and clarinetist Lori Freedman to present The Night of the Thousand Ears: a musical performance inspired by the lyric poetry of Ancient Greek poetess Sappho, on March 10 at the Onassis Cultural Centre. Renowned Greek actress Yiota Festa will recite poetry.
The Athens Concert Hall presents a tribute to Greek Diaspora composers on March 13. The Music of Greek Diaspora will feature the Athens Camerata on works by Greek Diaspora composers Minas Borboudakis, John Psathas, Konstantinos Karavassilis and Christos Hatzis.
A sparkling ambassador for jazz, the multi-awarded Dee Dee Bridgewater is appearing at the Athens Concert Hall, on March 12, for a celebration of the legendary Billie Holiday. |
