Posted: 30 May 2011 03:03 AM PDT Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife Laureen concluded an official visit to Greece (May 28-29). In a joint press conference, Prime Minister George Papandreou highlighted the good bilateral relations, which the two countries have fostered over the years, as well as Greek expats' contribution to this accomplishment. Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas and Canadian President of the Treasury Board, Tony Clement signed a bilateral agreement on youth mobility. Prime Minister George Papandreou accompanied his Canadian counterpart to the city of Kalavryta, symbolic cradle of the Greek Independence struggle and theatre of a brutal World War II massacre of the local population by the Nazi occupation forces in massive reprisal operations. The Canadian delegation paid homage to the victims by laying a wreath at the WWII memorial.
"Greece comes first," said Prime Minister George Papandreou yesterday from Kalavryta in the Peloponnese, stressing that he is determined to do his duty without being interested in petty political party games, or the political cost. "We are in the first year of a three-year effort," he noted, adding that he is optimistic Greece would have a primary budget surplus by next year. Meanwhile, speaking after the meeting of political party leaders on May 27, Papandreou stated that "we have just one objective: To save our nation and to change it fundamentally," noting that he is open to further consultations if they are conducive to the national effort. He also noted categorically that national elections will be held in 2013, ruling out speculations over snap elections. |

What remains is the extradition of Ratko Mladic to the ICTY so that Serbia […] manages to achieve its major new goal: the country's accession to the EU. Greece welcomes this development and congratulates the Serbian government on its determination and persistence." Posted: 30 May 2011 03:03 AM PDT The municipality of Delphi received the 2011 EDEN award as top sustainable tourism destination in Greece. The European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) is a project promoting sustainable tourism across the European Union and each year it is centred on a particular theme, chosen by the European Commission together with the relevant national tourism bodies. This year's theme was Tourism and Regeneration of Physical Sites and the municipality of Delphi topped the list for the regeneration project of Harmena neighbourhood in Amfissa. The traditional neighbourhood of Harmena was known as the "home of tanners" (tambakika in Greek) as for many centuries it was the place where leather-dressing was taking place. The Municipality of Delphi along with the winners from the other participating counties will be honoured in a special ceremony hosted by the European Commission in the fall of 2011. |
Museum of the Kalavrita Holocaust Posted: 30 May 2011 03:03 AM PDT The Municipal Museum of the Kalavrita Holocaust is housed at the historic Primary School of the town, the place which was bound to be the theatre where the first act of the Kalavryta tragedy was played. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century on donation by Greek benefactor Andreas Syggros, and was completely burnt down in a fire set by the Nazis on December 13, 1943. After the liberation, the school was rebuilt on its original blueprints. In 1986 it was declared a historic monument by the Ministry of Culture, and today it houses the museum of the town which serves as a centre for the promotion, through education, of peace in the world and cooperation among peoples. The central door of the museum remains forever closed, while at the town's square the clock has stopped at 14:34, the time of Kalavryta massacre. |
