Posted: 17 Mar 2011 03:34 AM PDT Alternate Defence Minister Panos Beglitis attended on March 15 the SEECP defence ministers meeting held in Budva, Montenegro. Beglitis stated that accelerating the EU/NATO accession of Balkan countries is a priority for Greece and referred to the 2014 Agenda initiative. The Deputy Minister further referred to joint regional initiatives and international peacekeeping missions as the second axis, emphasizing that Greece participates in all peace missions in the Balkans, under the aegis of the UN. Beglitis stressed that SEECP has contributed significantly to regional security through enhancing political dialogue and cooperation among its member countries. |
Foreign Ministry on Greeks in Japan Posted: 17 Mar 2011 03:34 AM PDT The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in constant contact with the Greeks in Japan through the Embassy of Greece in Tokyo. According to the FM spokesman Gregory Delavekouras, the Foreign Ministry after conferring with airline companies has reserved tickets to facilitate any Greek citizens who wish to return to Greece but have been unable to make the necessary reservations. Delavekouras also stated that currently there is no issue of relocating the Greek embassy in Tokyo to another city and added that Athens is ready to help if assistance is requested by the Japanese government. Deputy Foreign Minister Spyros Kouvelis met yesterday with Deputy Finance Minister of Bosnia-Herzegovina Fuad Kasumovic and Health Minister of the Serbobosnian Republic Ranko Skrbic. Talks focused on Greek aid for the reconstruction of the Kasindo hospital, as well as Western Balkans EU accession issues in light of the Agenda 2014 initiative.
The Hellenic Russian Chamber of Commerce and the Russian Real Estate Federation held a conference yesterday on New Opportunities for Russian Investors in the Greek real Estate Market. Addressing the event, Deputy FM Kouvelis referred to the long-standing historic and cultural ties linking the two countries and the expanding economic cooperation and prospective. Posted: 17 Mar 2011 03:35 AM PDT Health Minister Andreas Loverdos announced on March 15 the Bicycle In Our Lives pilot programme aimed at promoting bicycle use as both a healthy choice and an environmentally friendly means of transportation. Three automatic bicycle rental points will be placed in three historic spots of Athens: under the Acropolis, in Thiseio and at the Athens Cathedral in Plaka. The service will be free of charge for residents and guests, who will also be presented with proposed bicycle trails in the historical centre. In Thessaloniki, the Ministry plans to put ten stations of exercise bikes that have been coverted to generate electrical power. The stations will be located on the city's waterfront and will power the street lamps around the White Tower. Other places to benefit from the initiative will be the Northern Aegean island of Samothraki and the town of Archangelo in Pella, where mountain bicycles will be provided for mountain bike trailing. The water element and the way it is depicted in paintings, collages, photographs and comic stories by elementary and secondary school students is the theme of an exhibition titled Water Stories that will be on display at Athens Syntagma Metro Station on March 17-20. The exhibition - held on the occasion of the annual World Water Day (March 22) - features 2,060 entries in a student competition hosted by the non-governmental organization Mediterranean SOS Network. The Black Light Theatre – or better known as Black Treatre- of Prague will perform Alice in the Wonderland and Gulliver's Travels in one show, at the Athens Badminton Theatre on March 18-20. After last year's sold-out performances, Pedro Almodovar's muse, the great Spanish singer Luz Casal returns to Greece with a concert dedicated to romance. Titled La pasión, the programme features bolero, tango and flamenco pieces from Argentina, Spain and Mexico. At the Athens Concert Hall on March 18-19 and at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall on March 20.
