EU Task Force against Youth Unemployment
February 3, 2012 at 12:02 PM

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso announced, on January 30, that he will proceed with the establishment of "task forces" in eight EU members, including Greece, where unemployment for young adults under the age of 25 is higher than 30%.

The initiative will be implemented in Greece, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Portugal and Slovakia.

In a letter EU Commission President sent to the leaders of the 8 countries, he outlined  proposed steps, including: the nomination of a contact person by national authorities, a visit by the Commission team in February, and the identification of the necessary elements of a youth employment plan and the support schemes for SMEs which could be accelerated or benefit from a remaining €82bn of funding from the European Social Fund, the European Regional Development Fund and the Cohesion Fund. Greece could benefit from up to €4.3bn for this purpose.

The objective is to develop by mid-April targeted plans to be included in the National Reform Programmes in which each member state outlines its economic policy priorities in the context of the European Semester. In October 2011, according to recently revealed data, unemployment reached 47.2% among young people under 25 in Greece.

Samothrace, Sacred Land
February 3, 2012 at 11:57 AM

Renowned for the famous statue of the Winged Victory, Samothrace is a place of exciting history, wild natural beauty and mystical aura.

In ancient times it was known as the Island of Great Gods, as it was dedicated to the Kaviria Mysteries, the ritual worship of the Cabeiri gods.

Beloved by devoted fans for the mystical atmosphere and its wild scenery, Samothrace could barely fit in the model of a sun-and-sand destination. Predictably, the island is a magnet for archaeology lovers. The Palaiopoli site hosts the legendary Sanctuary of the Great Gods, one of the principal Pan-Hellenic religious sanctuaries. The Temple Complex aroused continuous archaeological fascination since the 17th century.

Equally fascinating is the Archaeological Museum of Samothrace, designed by New York Metropolitan Museum architect Stuart M. Shaw, showcasing a large collection of cemetery finds, reconstructed architectural parts and treasures from the Sanctuary.

Although Samothrace boasts a number of spectacular beaches, it is mostly loved for the mountainous scenery. The imposing Saos Mountain dominates the island, rising to 1,611 m. Rivers run through its slopes, forming cascades and lagoons known as "vathres."

The scenery is ideal for trekking and swimming, with numerous plane-tree-covered paths alongside brooks, cascades and natural pools.

The island is also rich in thermal springs, notably at Therma, with thermal baths known since antiquity for their therapeutic value.

The traditional villages of Samothrace add to its allure. Chora, the island's capital, is a picturesque 15th century settlement, and testimony to the island's Genoan era, with its landmark medieval castle a remnant of the Gattilusi Family domination.

Temenos Screenings @ University of Michigan
February 2, 2012 at 2:04 PM

The University of Michigan hosts a two-day tribute to Gregory J. Markopoulos and Robert Beavers. The programme, headed Temenos, after the outdoor screening festival, is set in Markopoulos' father's native town of Lyssarea in the Peloponnese.

The Greek-American director started filming in the late 1940s. Using unique forms of camera work and abstract narratives, he created ravishing imagery and complex patterns of what he termed "thought-images," and soon became a major figure in American Independent cinema. In the 1960s he moved to Greece, where he started Temenos, an annual 4-day cinematic pilgrimage near Epidaurus. The programme is in honour of the 2012 Temenos event and will be screened on February 4 and 5.
