European Health Ministers on Illegal Migration

Minister of Health Andreas Loverdos along with his counterparts from Italy, Cyprus and Malta issued a common statement voicing concerns over potential public health dangers posed by illegal migration.

The statement was made on the sidelines of an informal EU meeting of Health ministers held in Budapest on April 5.

The ministers expressed concern over a possible increase of illegal migration, due to the upheaval in North Africa, as well as over the geographically disparate epidemiological situation and the poorer general health status of arriving populations, calling for an EU effort to manage such risks, which cannot be contained at national level.

They further call on the European Commission to assist countries that receive large numbers of illegal migrants, in collaboration with the European Centre for the Prevention and Control of Diseases and the European Regional Office of the World Health Organisation
  • WHO Delegation in Evros
A delegation of the World Health Organisation (WHO) is visiting Evros to examine problems related to the health of immigrants and to assess hygiene conditions in reception centres.

The delegation's report will be presented at a meeting to be held in Rome on April 13, where cooperation on the public health impact of illegal migration will also be discussed.

Decision on Greek Minority Property in Turkey

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 02:35 AM PDT

The Turkish Education Ministry has decided to withdraw its supervision from 15 long-closed primary and secondary Greek minority school buildings.

Pantelis Vigas (photo), an ethnic Greek of Istanbul and a member of the Turkish Supreme Council of the General Directorate for Religious Property, praised the decision saying that "the school buildings in question can now be repaired and used to host cultural events or meet other ethnic Greek minority needs."

Up until now, the Turkish government had not formally registered the ceasing of operation and continued to appoint headmasters, although the schools have been closed for years, maintaining that the Treaty of Lausanne did not permit the administrative recording of the real status of the buildings.
