European Council President, Herman Van Rompuy, was in Athens yesterday, where he was received by Hellenic Republic President Karolos Papoulias and held talks with Prime Minister George Papandreou and main opposition New Democracy (ND) party leader, Antonis Samaras.

Following his meeting with Prime Minister - with whom they discussed the current economic and financial situation as well as issues relating to migration, asylum and border management,- Van Rompuy expressed support for the "work done and to be done."

The reforms that are being implemented by this government are necessary to make Greece more competitive, more modern and more able to grow faster and create more jobs in the future.

On his part, the Premier said he briefed President Van Rompuy on the course of big reforms that are being carried out in Greece, the ones currently under way and what has already been implemented, and on top of that, what lies ahead.

He added that, "the effort Greek citizens are exerting, painstaking though it may be, is yielding results."

The economy and the issue of illegal migration dominated the meeting between Van Rompuy and opposition leader Antonis Samaras, also held yesterday.

European Council President also delivered a lecture on Greece and Europe: building a better future in difficult times, an event organized by the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP).

  • IMF: Greece to see Growth in 2012
"Greece is expected to see growth in 2012," the International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasts in its April 2011 World Economic Outlook (WEO).

According to IMF's report, the global economic recovery is gaining strength, with world growth projected at about 4,5 % in both 2011 and 2012, but unemployment remains high, and risks of overheating are building in emerging market economies.

For Greece in particular, the IMF predicts that Real Gross Domestic Product will shrink by 3 % this year but it will grow by 1.1% in 2012, noting that despite the fact that the current account deficit remained high, there were signs of a turnout to the adjustment in 2010.
