Parliament Approval Paves the Way for Reform Posted: 01 Jul 2011 03:20 AM PDT The implementation law linked to the Medium-Term Fiscal Strategy Programme was approved yesterday by Parliament, with 155 deputies voting in favour and 136 against. Meanwhile, Prime Minister George Papandreou addressed a letter to European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso yesterday, regarding the implementation of the Commission's intention to support any effort that will reinforce the economic effectiveness and the synergies between the Programme and EU funds. In the letter, the Premier suggested the suspension, temporarily or definitively for the period 2011-13, of the national contribution for EU funded programmes, a move that could contribute to the effort of the Greek economy to exit from recession, by reinforcing the potential for growth and healthy entrepreneurship. |

For the 9th year, the Folktale Festival takes place on the island of Kea(or Tzia), on July 2- 10. This festival is a special event that was born out of love and the need to spread the cultural treasures, through fairy-tale readings, theatrical plays, book exhibitions and creative games. This year's main theme is Sea and its significant impact on people. This Europe-wide institution gives the opportunity to Greek and foreign artists to present their work. Under the title "Metamorphoses," this year's programme includes fairy-tale narratives, musical-art events, art exhibitions, puppet shows, shadow theatre, as well as workshops for children and adults.
The exceptionally picturesque island of Kea (or Tzia) lies very close to the south-east coast of Attica and for this reason it is one of the most popular destinations of Athenians. The island's capital, Hora or Ioulida, has maintained its Cycladic idiom intact. Built in the shape of an amphitheatre, at the site of ancient Ioulis, it offers the visitor an impressive sight of two-storey houses, steep cobbled alleyways, and splendid churches. Not far from Hora, on an old stone road, lies the Lion of Kea, an archaic structure (6th Century) carved out in stone. On the western side, there is Aghios Nikolaos bay, which is considered to be one of the safest harbours in the Mediterranean, and Vourkari, a cosmopolitan fishing village. Kea is also a walker's haven, as it has a wide network (36 kilometers) of mostly stone-paved old trails and footpaths. Athens Plus (02.07.10): Kea-Walking trails |
