Economist Conference in Athens Posted: 19 May 2011 03:36 AM PDT
Main opposition New Democracy (ND) party leader Antonis Samaras, addressing an annual Economist conference in Athens yesterday, said that Greece is in the eye of a global cyclone and, a year after the implementation of the EU-IMF "memorandum," its position has worsened. Samaras added that "the main reason for the failure was the plan itself" and explained that the implementation of measures of harsh austerity together with a decrease in public expenditures and an increase in taxes has worsened the recession. He further reiterated his party's view that the basis for the country's exit from the crisis is the proposal he submitted, last week, at the Zappeion Hall on the restarting of the Greek economy that, as he said, must be implemented in its entirety to produce results. Addressing the same Conference, Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou expressed confidence that the country will continue moving on the right track, making the right choices even if the road ahead is difficult. He stressed that there was no room for relaxing the fiscal consolidation effort, noting it was necessary to implement all interventions needed to bring the fiscal deficit to targets set. These interventions, worth €6 billion, include both spending cuts and measures to raise revenues. He further said that, in the next few years, the public sector would have about 150,000 employees less, as the government would minimize new hirings, cut contract workers and promote voluntary pension schemes. A number of economists, experts and EU, European Central Bank (ECB) and IMF officials addressed the Economist Conference on its second day. |

May 19: Pontian Greek Genocide Memorial Day Posted: 19 May 2011 03:07 AM PDT May 19 is the Pontian Greek Genocide Memorial Day. The day commemorates the events during the years 1914-1923 which led to the Pontian Greek minority's elimination and evacuation from the former Ottoman Empire. For centuries, the Pontians had settled in regions of today's Turkey, Russia, Georgia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Armenia. These Greeks settled in areas around the Black Sea -referred to as the "Pontos Euxinos" (Greek for hospitable sea)- and through commerce, they founded the cities of Trebizond, Sampsounta, Sinope and Heraclea Pontica (800 BC until the 20th century).
