New Action Plan for Combating Tax Evasion

Posted: 03 May 2011 02:45 AM PDT

The Finance Ministry announced yesterday a three year National Action Plan for Combating Tax Evasion.

The Action Plan, which sets very specific implementation targets, was agreed by an Inter-Ministerial Committee, which included Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou, Regional Development and Competitiveness Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis, Citizen Protection Minister Christos Papoutsis as well as Justice, Transparency and Human Rights Minister Haris Kastanidis.

Aiming at modernizing the operations of the tax collection mechanism and enhancing the efficiency of revenue collection, the Action Plan includes specific measures that would enable the identification and punishment of large-scale tax evasion, as well as a number of actions that would make tax administration much more user-friendly so as to increase voluntary compliance and citizen participation.

The Finance Ministry also announced the appointment of Ioannis Diotis as the new head of the Economic and Financial Crime Unit. Diotis is a distinguished former public prosecutor responsible for bringing the "17th November" terrorist group to justice.

Commenting on the announcement of Osama Bin Laden's death, Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas said that "international terrorism is an abhorrent phenomenon, a constant threat to international peace and security that undermines the prospects of societies throughout the world for prosperity and development."

He also stressed that "Osama Bin Laden's death dealt a strong blow to terrorism.

But the fight does not end here. The international community – irrespective of religious beliefs and political considerations – needs to remain united in the international effort to end this scourge."

Anti-Smoking Award for Papandreou

Posted: 03 May 2011 02:45 AM PDT

World Health Organisation (WHO) on April 28, announced that Prime Minister George Papandreou is to receive a World No Tobacco Day Award for his steadfast campaign and tough anti-smoking legislation in Greece.

The decision was announced in Moscow during the first global Health Ministers' conference on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), for which tobacco use is a major risk factor.

Every year, through the award, WHO distinguishes individuals or organizations in each of the six WHO Regions for their accomplishments in the area of tobacco control.

The award will most likely be presented to the premier on June 3, when WHO officially inaugurates its first special bureau for Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) for southeastern Europe in Athens.

Book Reading: Going Up

Posted: 03 May 2011 02:45 AM PDT

An improving attitude towards book reading was depicted in the 3rd National Survey on Reading Habits and Cultural Practices conducted by the National Book Centre of Greece (EKEBI).

The survey showed that the number of steady readers (people that read more than 10 books a year) remains stable, representing 8.1% of the population, while the number of casual readers (1-9 books a year) has risen significantly to 34.2% of the population, compared to 25,4% in 2004.

On the other hand, the number of non readers has decreased to 16.4% of the population, compared to 22.2% in 2004. Greek and foreign fiction books remain the most popular book category, with history, psychology, and religion following. Women aged 35-54 are once again book reading champions.

According to EKEBI, the good news is that, despite the financial crisis and the consequent cuts in expenditure, book reading remains a steady value for the Greek public that turns to library or private borrowing rather than less reading.

The bad news is that the steady readers' age average moves towards the 35-54 age box (compared to the 25-44 bracket a decade ago). This development is attributed to an increase in the average working hours of the most active groups of the population.

Storytelling & Sustainable Development

A group of Greek, English, Irish, Scottish, Dutch, French and Americans have set up a storytelling association in a rural Cretan location.

The Friends of Amari is an international association contributing to the revitalization of the village and valley of Amari in Crete through the art of storytelling and by supporting local cultural initiatives, including recycling, collecting local stories, preserving local heritage and establishing a school of storytelling.

At the base of Crete's highest mountain, Psiloritis (Mt Ida), the Amari valley is the land Zeus roamed as a boy. Shrines to Hermes, Pan and many other Gods and Goddesses dot the landscape, each still telling stories that have fashioned civilization for 6,000 years.

President @ Nebojsa Tower Inauguration

Posted: 02 May 2011 03:50 AM PDT

Hellenic Republic President Karolos Papoulias and Serbia's President Boris Tadic inaugurated in Belgrade on April 29 the landmark Nebojsa Tower, the site where Greek Independence struggle hero Rigas Velestinlis (also known as Feraios) was put to death by the Ottomans in 1798.

In his speech, Papoulias stressed Feraios' role as a 'forerunner of the idea of European unification,' the roots of which lay in the idea of freedom based on education, equality before the law, justice and peace, friendship and cooperation between countries of the Balkans and the Mediterranean.

The tower has recently undergone renovation which was funded by Greece and the municipality of Belgrade. The restoration work was carried out over two years and cost € 1.8 million.

The tower will serve as a museum featuring exhibits related to the life and work of Rigas Feraios, the Serbian struggle for independence from Ottoman rule as well as exhibits related the tower's use as a prison at the end of 18th – beginning of 19th centuries.

Nejbosa Tower is a medieval structure built by Hungarians on the ruins of an older Roman tower dating from the 1st century A.D, which was destroyed and rebuilt several times.
Rigas Feraios was imprisoned there for roughly seven months before he was put to death, thus becoming one of the first martyrs for Greece's independence.

Resistance hero Santas passes away

Apostolos Santas, who together with Manolis Glezos climbed atop the Acropolis Hill and took down the swastika in the early morning hours of May 31, 1941 - a defiant and extraordinarily symbolic act of resistance at the beginning of the Axis occupation of Greece (1941-44) - died on April 30, at the age of 89.

"It was the first gasp of resistance … Two 18-year-olds toyed with history; they saw a symbol and decided to become symbols, themselves," read a Greek Parliament resolution issued at plenum session honouring the two men, in 2008.

"Europa Nostra" Awards: The Messene Project

Posted: 02 May 2011 03:50 AM PDT

The 2011 European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage known as Europa Nostra Awards will be conferred on June 10 in Amsterdam by the Commissioner responsible for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth Androulla Vassiliou.

Every year, the awarding committee chooses to praise cultural endeavours from member states and other European countries in four fields: conservation, research, special services, and education & awareness.

The site of Ancient Messene has been selected by Europa Nostra in the category of preservation. "The Messene Project has been awarded because its large scale conservation and restoration interventions have revealed the qualities and the significance of the administrative and religious centre, as well as the public space of this outstanding Hellenic city of the 4th century B.C."

"Ancient Messene" is one of the 27 laureates of this year's competition and was selected among 140 contesting projects from 31 countries.

Highlighting the importance of Europa Nostra, Commissioner Vassiliou pointed out that, throughout the years, culture has considerably contributed to European growth, since the cultural and "creative" industries employ 8.5 million people across the EU and contributes to its GDP by 4.5%. In addition, 40% of the world's tourist activity revolves around culture.
