Sovereign Credit Ratings Questioned

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 03:18 AM PDT

The European Commission yesterday questioned the decision of credit rating agency Standard & Poor's to downgrade Greece's economy.

European Commission spokesperson for Economic and Monetary Affairs Amadeu Altafaj Tardio told reporters that the Commission does not share the view of rating agencies, as it has its own assessments, which it shares with the International Monetary Fund. He also expressed the Commission's satisfaction for the Greek government's "ambitious efforts" towards promoting privatisations.

On his part, Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou said that the rating agencies do not take into consideration the strict assessments that Greece receives from the EU, the IMF and the European Central Bank at regular intervals. In related news, according to an IMF working paper, the European debt crisis "has been the theater of sovereign credit rating downgrades, widening of sovereign bond and credit default swap spreads, and pressures on stock markets."

Tree-planting Event on Kastellorizo

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 03:16 AM PDT

"Every time I'm here with you on Kastellorizo -this island on the edge of the Aegean but in the heart of Greece- I feel the same admiration and respect for all of those living in border regions," Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas said, addressing a tree-planting event on the island of Kastelorizo, organised by the Society for the Study of Diaspora Hellenism, in collaboration with Megistis Municipality and the Greek American foundation Plant your Roots in Greece.

He then said that "Turkey's provocative behaviour has not changed, just as the firm replies we make to every provocation have not changed. We aren't budging an inch. We will not suffer the slightest dent in our sovereign rights, from one end of Greece to the other.

And of course, we are not relinquishing Kastellorizo's rights to its natural wealth. Greece's weapon is not shouts. It is not slogans. Greece's weapon is international law, international legality, our position in the international community."

A draft bill introducing an opt-out system regarding organ donation was presented by Health Minister Andreas Loverdos at the Cabinet on March 30. The bill further includes provisions regarding cases of organ transplantation from a living donor, as well as criminal sanctions for organ trade.

PM: Europe Needs a New Model

Addressing the Socialist and Democratic MEPs' conference yesterday in Athens, Prime Minister George Papandreou stressed the need for a new model of growth, cooperation and governance within the European Union, adding that Europe must become more democratic in order to tackle its problems.

Group leader Martin Shultz said that Europe is not moving in the right direction, noting that austerity hampered growth and did not solve problems. Papandreou also referred to the downgrade of Greece's economy by Standard&Poor's and criticised credit rating agencies for panicking.

"We have seen the rating agencies go from the bubble of euphoria to the panic of risk" Papandreou said, reminding that the same agencies rated positively toxic bonds which created the current international economic crisis. He also underlined that Greece was downgraded not because of what it is doing but because of an unbalanced assessment of the recent decisions made at the European Council of March 25.

Meanwhile, in a press release issued yesterday, the Finance Ministry says "S&P's downgrade is based on a one-sided and unjustified assessment of the European Council's decisions and the budgetary risks facing Greece, without giving due weight to the actions the Greek Government is taking to address these risks."

Farewell to Iakovos Kambanellis

Posted: 30 Mar 2011 03:08 AM PDT

Iakovos Kambanellis, one of the most prominent figures of post-war Greek literature, died yesterday at the age of 89.

Kambanellis was born on the island of Naxos and studied design in Athens. During the Nazi occupation of Greece in WW2 he became actively involved in the Resistance movement. He was arrested by the German occupying forces in 1943 and was sent to Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp, from which he was liberated by the Allied Forces in 1945.

His legendary Mauthausen novel, which describes his experience as a concentration camp survivor, was set to music by Mikis Theodorakis and became one of the most influential works in Greek culture.

He wrote more than twenty plays and twelve film scripts, including Stella by Michael Cacoyannis and The Dragon by Nikos Koundouros. In an announcement, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism expressed deep regret for Kambanellis' passing, noting that the deceased defined the style of post-war Greek theatre, adding that his works were deeply loved by the Greek audience, as they soberly and truthfully depicted the reality of life in Greece, its difficulties and joys.
